Microneedling aftercare, day by day

8 July 2026 · 7 min read · Reviewed by Cheryl, Aesthetics & Skin Specialist

What SkinPen microneedling actually looks and feels like for the first week, what to use, what to avoid and when to call the clinic.

Day of treatment

Expect the skin to look flushed, similar to moderate sunburn, and to feel warm and tight for several hours. This is the controlled injury response that drives collagen production, and it settles as the evening goes on.

Use only what you are given or told to use. No make-up, no active ingredients, no exercise and nothing that makes you hot or sweat for the rest of the day.

Days one and two

Redness fades towards pink. Skin usually feels tight and looks slightly swollen, particularly across the cheeks. A gentle cleanser, a bland barrier moisturiser and a mineral SPF every morning are all that is needed.

Most people are comfortable returning to work on day one. If you would rather not be seen at all, plan treatment for a Thursday or Friday.

Days three to five

Light flaking or a sandpaper texture is normal as the surface renews. Do not pick, scrub or exfoliate it away — let it shed on its own, or you risk pigmentation and delayed healing.

Retinoids, acids and vitamin C stay out of the routine until day five to seven, and only go back in once flaking has finished.

Week one onwards

Skin usually looks brighter and smoother by the end of the first week, but the meaningful change is collagen remodelling, which builds from around four weeks and continues for up to three months. A course of three, spaced four to six weeks apart, is what produces a visible difference in acne scarring and texture.

Daily broad-spectrum SPF is not optional afterwards. Sun exposure on freshly treated skin is the most common cause of a disappointing result.

When to call

Ring the clinic on 07717 363815 if redness worsens rather than settles after 48 hours, if you develop increasing tenderness, spreading heat or any discharge, or if a cold sore starts to appear. Early advice is always easier than late.
